Gravitational Waves Constraints on Post-Inflationary Phases Stiffer than Radiation

چکیده

We point out that the existence of post-inflationary phases stiffer than radiation leads to the production of stochastic gravitational waves (GW) backgrounds whose logarithmic energy spectra (in critical units) are typically “blue” at high frequencies. The maximal spectral slope (for present frequencies larger than 10 Hz) is of order one and it is related to the maximal sound velocity of the stiff plasma governing the evolution of the geometry. The duration of the stiff phase is crucially determined by the backreaction of the GW leaving the horizon during the de Sitter phase and re-entering during the stiff phase. Therefore, the maximal (inflationary) curvature scale has to be fine-tuned to a value smaller than the limits set by the large scale measurements (HdS< ∼10 MP ) in order to a have a sufficiently long stiff phase reaching an energy scale of the order of the 1 TeV and even lower if we want the stiff phase to touch the hadronic era (corresponding to Thad ∼ 140 MeV). By looking more positively at our exercise we see that, if an inflationary phase is followed by a stiff phase, there exist an appealing possibility of “graviton reheating” whose effective temperature can be generally quite low. Graviton Production in Inflationary Cosmology

We provide a completely quantum-mechanical derivation of the spectrum of gravitational waves produced in any inflationary cosmology. The gravitational waves result from a sequence of Bogoliubov transformations between creation and annihilation operators defined in de Sitter space and in radiation-and matter-dominated Robertson-Walker spacetimes. We discuss how the results depend on the initial ...

Generating Gravitational Waves After Inflation

It has long been known that an inflationary phase in the very early universe sources a background of gravitational waves. The amplitude of this background is tightly constrained by Cosmic Microwave Background [CMB] data [3,4] placing nontrivial constraints on the inflationary parameter space [5]. The temperature anisotropy of the CMB is measured with much higher accuracy than the polarization a...

Constraints on Generalized Inflationary Cosmologies

We consider cosmologies having an inflationary period during which the Robertson-Walker scale factor is an arbitrary function of time satisfying /~ > 0 (not necessarily an exponential). We show that any such inflationary period will produce long-wavelength gravitational waves which can affect present observations of the microwave background. Using present bounds on the quadrupole anisotropy we ...

Primordial Gravitational Waves and Inflation: CMB and Direct Detection With Space-Based Laser Interferometers

The curl-modes of Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) polarization probe horizon-scale primordial gravitational waves related to inflation. A significant source of confusion is expected from a lensing conversion of polarization related to density perturbations to the curl mode, during the propagation of photons through the large scale structure. Either high resolution CMB anisotropy observations ...

Relic Gravitational Waves and the Detection

As the “smoking-gun” evidence for inflation, the relic gravitational waves (RGW) have been studied by a lot of authors. Although, it hasn’t been detected until now, some constraints have been achieved by the observations. Future experiments for the RGW detection are mainly two kinds: the CMB (cosmic microwave background radiation) experiments and the laser interferometers. In this paper, we stu...
